This Adventure Motorcycle Training in Georgia is designed for riders who want to improve their off-road skills without unnecessary risk or intimidation. Led by professional instructor Bret Tkacs, this course uses a progressive method that focuses on understanding why techniques work, not just memorizing steps.
Whether you’re new to adventure riding or have years of experience, this training meets you at your current ability level and builds skill through structured, layered drills. Each exercise emphasizes control, balance, and risk management before increasing difficulty, allowing you to develop confidence in a predictable, supportive learning environment.
Bret’s instruction is especially well suited for mature riders who value longevity, precision, and thoughtful decision-making over speed or bravado. Training prioritizes safety, clear communication, and skill retention, making it ideal for riders who want to improve without getting hurt. Read more about Bret's training philosophy here.
The focus is on riding ADV motorcycles efficiently, safely, and intelligently in real-world conditions so you leave with skills you can apply on your own adventures.
500 acres of private OHV land at Rockcrusher Farm ensures a wide diversity of terrain. Based on weather, terrain may vary from high traction dirt to wet Georgia clay. This location has access to open areas, three MX tracks, hills, motorcycle trails ranging from beginner to expert, plus mud and gravel.
Our courses do have minimum requirements for tires and protective gear, including proper off-road boots. These standards aren’t meant to exclude anyone or create financial pressure. They exist because decades of training riders has consistently shown us that when people are learning new skills, slow-speed tip-overs are common. That’s simply part of the learning process.
Proper equipment significantly reduces injury risk and allows riders to learn confidently and safely. Our requirements also ensure we meet all of the requirements set by insurance, land owners and local laws/ordinances.
We are deeply committed to accessibility to this sport. You do not need premium or expensive gear; many affordable options meet these standards. If cost is a concern, please reach out and we’ll gladly help you find budget-friendly solutions. Our goal is to ensure every rider trains with us safely, confidently, and successfully. If you have gear concerns due to physical limitations, contact us to discuss how we can accommodate.
This location is rustic and includes a small shed with electricity and a couch. Two porta-potties are on-site; there is no running water or showers available. We will bring enough potable water to refill water bladders. Hayesville is a short drive away with restaurants and hotels.
We do not rent bikes
We will be ready to welcome you anytime after 3:00pm to settle in before the Course Orientation. At 5:00pm, meet your new riding partners and instructors (including Bret) at the shed onsite for an overview of the course and introduction of core training concepts. Bret will lead the class on a guided walk of the course, giving you a first look at the terrain and obstacles ahead.
Training begins at 8:00am sharp and will initially take place in a large, grassy field with natural features.
You will develop your off-road skills through a better understanding of forces and physics rather than the traditional step-by-step instruction. If you are an advanced rider, you will learn critical details that will lead you to excel in your riding skills. Understanding the “why” is critical to mastering your machine.
Every class is a little different as Bret and his crew are always trying new techniques to teach you more effectively. The objective is to learn the following skills:
– Seated and standing riding techniques
– Motorcycle ergonomics… setting up your motorcycle to your body
– Low-energy riding techniques
– Traction management skills
– Control of power delivery
– Slow-speed balance and maneuvering
– Lifting (single person and multi-person)
After a good nights’ rest, your mind will reset and you will be ready to build upon the skills learned the previous day.
This day is about turning the gross motor skills from day one into fine motor control techniques that will reduce your energy use and make your bike feel lighter and more agile. Various terrain features will be utilized within Rockcrusher Farm to tease with your brain as you learn how to evaluate each obstacle. All of this is done without the need to remember the “right formula”.
Depending on what terrain is available, lessons may include:
– Narrow track riding and ruts
– Loose surfaces (sand, mud, or loose rock)
– Trail turns
– Hills (ascending, descending, starting, stopping, u-turns)
– Slide turns and other useful skills that will set you apart from other riders
At 6:00pm, you will be treated to a graduation dinner in at a nearby restaurant. Plan on joining us for a quick graduation ceremony, a fun wrap up to the course.
Time to leave Rockcrusher Farm and take your new skills to the real world and join us for the time warp class (affectionally called Sunday school by the instructors).
This 4-5 hour class takes you on a real ride while teaching you how to eliminate the number one cause of accidents on pavement and on dirt. Using local roads to develop advanced visual process and terrain reading, you will learn to eliminate information overload. These advanced techniques are identical to those we taught to United States Army Special Forces and others for 11 years.
In partnership with the advanced terrain reading skills you will be learning, you will also be using the skills from training to to achieve your riding goal of using less energy, riding with less stress and removing the “surprises” that catch many riders unprepared. Get a taste of what adventure riding is all about, done correctly with the right skills.
This optional training day is provided for an additional cost and is only available for the students who have attended both days of ADV Training. There is a ten student limit unless three instructors are available.
