Looking to learn in a more challenging environment? This is your event! Designed for returning students and riders looking for a more challenging learning environment. The same low energy, technique-over-brawn concepts that are taught in our ADV training courses are taught during Challenge Training, however they are all learned in more challenging environments.
Due to the nature of this training camp unexpected learning opportunities will occur, ensuring the lesson plan will be fluid, creating a unique class you will never forget!
This training primarily takes place on Class 3 and Class 4 or unintentionally Class 5 terrain. You are not expected to be able to ride your adventure bike through this type of terrain when you arrive, but you are expected to have the physical conditioning and mental drive needed to methodically work through challenging terrain.
This is not a class to show how much you already know or to pound your chest and “just send it”. This is a place to learn strategy and skills for overcoming difficult terrain on big bikes in a controlled manner.
1. Mental Stamina. You need to show up with the mental ability to override your fears.
2. Physical Conditioning. Due to the mobility of this course, if you become physically exhausted, you may not be able to attend all lessons.
Boots & Tires. Specific boots, tires, and gear are required for this course. Review this list to ensure you have the correct gear. If you show up without the correct boots and/or tires, you may not be permitted to ride and will not receive a refund: https://brettkacs.com/training/gear-requirements/
Bike Protection. Your bike must have essential protection for any components that can cause your bike to become unrideable. Examples include a full-coverage skid plate, lever guards or short levers, and crash bars that protect the radiator or other critically vulnerable parts.
This location is rustic and includes a small shed with electricity and a couch. Two porta-potties are on-site; there is no running water or showers available. We will bring enough potable water to refill water bladders. Hayesville is a short drive away with restaurants and hotels.
We do not rent bikes
We will be ready to welcome you anytime after 3:00pm to settle in before the Course Orientation. At 5:00pm, meet your new riding partners and instructors (including Bret) at the shed onsite for an overview of the course and introduction of core training concepts. Bret will lead the class on a guided walk of the course, giving you a first look at the terrain and obstacles ahead.
Training starts at 8:00am sharp and covers the core skills of sitting and standing in loose terrain before moving onto more challenging skills.
You will develop your off-road skills through a better understanding of forces and physics rather than the traditional step-by-step instruction. You will learn critical details that will lead you to excel in your riding skills. Understanding the “why” is critical to mastering your machine.
Challenge Camps are expected to be very unique due to the differences in the riders attending, terrain available and weather. The objective is to learn the following skills (same as the regular ADV camps):
– Seated and standing riding techniques
– Motorcycle ergonomics… setting up your motorcycle to your body
– Low-energy riding techniques
– Traction management skills
– Control of power delivery
– Slow-speed balance and maneuvering
– Lifting (single person and multi-person)
After a needed good night's rest, your mind will reset and you will be ready to build upon the skills learned the previous day.
This day is about turning the challenges of the first day into easier riding while reinforcing the techniques used on Friday. The ultimate goal is to reduce the energy you use while riding, and the risk of a crash. As a bonus, your big bike will feel lighter and more agile. It is likely that various terrain features used on Friday will be utilized again, offering opportunities to continue polishing your skills.
Depending on what terrain is available, lessons may include:
– Narrow track riding and ruts
– Loose surfaces (sand, mud, or loose rock)
– Trail turns
– Hills (ascending, descending, starting, stopping, u-turns)
– Slide turns and other useful skills that will set you apart from other riders
Saturday evening will be a graduation dinner at a local restaurant at 6:00pm.
Time to leave Rockcrusher Farm and take your new skills to the real world and join us for the time warp class (affectionally called Sunday school by the instructors).
This 4-5 hour class takes you on a real ride while teaching you how to eliminate the number one cause of accidents on pavement and on dirt. Using local roads to develop advanced visual process and terrain reading, you will learn to eliminate information overload. These advanced techniques are identical to those we taught to United States Army Special Forces and others for 11 years.
In partnership with the advanced terrain reading skills you will be learning, you will also be using the skills from training to to achieve your riding goal of using less energy, riding with less stress and removing the “surprises” that catch many riders unprepared. Get a taste of what adventure riding is all about, done correctly with the right skills.
This optional training day is provided for an additional cost and is only available for the students who have attended both days of ADV Training. There is a ten student limit unless three instructors are available.
